Announcement of the lecture by Ana Šitina Žepina
The first lecture of the year organized by the “Juraj Dalmatinac” Society, as part of the “Šibenik Cultural Heritage” project, will be held on Thursday, March 27th in the multimedia hall of the Centre starting at 6:30 PM.
The topic of the lecture is: Baroque Painting in Šibenik, and it will be held by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sc. Ana Šitina Žepina, art historian.
Baroque painting in Šibenik was marked by an economic and demographic decline caused by the Venetian-Turkish wars. Until 2020, there was no comprehensive research on this topic. Analysis of archival and field materials has determined that the most valuable painting oeuvre is linked to the period after the Council of Trent, when Šibenik churches were adorned with works by Venetian painters such as Palma the Younger and Filippo Zaniberti.
In the second half of the 17th century, in the absence of excellent works, commissioners turned to local masters and followers of diluted tenebrism. Only after the liberation from the Ottomans did the artistic scene revive under the leadership of Šibenik’s bishops Giovanni Domenico Callegari and Carlo Antonio Donadoni, who commissioned paintings and liturgical objects from Venice. Thus, Šibenik once again became part of the contemporary Baroque painting movement.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sc. Ana Šitina Žepina received her PhD in 2020 on the topic of 16th and 17th century painting in the Šibenik diocese. She teaches at the University of Zadar and is engaged in research on Baroque painting, post-Tridentine sacral furnishings and the commissioning activities of the noble Janković family in Slavonia. She has participated in scientific projects related to the artistic heritage of the eastern Adriatic coast.
