Lecture announcement

On Thursday, February 12th, starting at 7pm, another lecture will be held in the multimedia hall of the Centre, organized by the Society for the Preservation of Šibenik Heritage “Juraj Dalmatinac”.
The topic of the lecture is “Vis – an Island in the Flow of Time”. The lecturer is Dr. sc. Dinko Radić, director and founder of the Local History Museum of the Town of Vis, a 2400-year-old town and the center of the first state in this region. He spent most of his career in Vela Luka on Korčula, studying the prehistory of the island part of central Dalmatia and trying to valorize our heritage and bring it closer to the younger generations and visitors. He is the author of a number of scientific, professional, overview and journalistic works. He has organized several exhibitions, led several projects and achieved successful cooperation with a large number of domestic and international professional institutions.
Thanks to its central position, the island of Vis has played a significant, even key role in dominating the Adriatic and the nearby mainland in various historical periods. Vis (Issa) is a city founded 2400 years ago by Greeks from Syracuse in Sicily, and soon became the center of a Hellenistic state that encompassed the area of central Dalmatia. Throughout history, the island has been fought over by the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Russians, English, French, Italians, Austrians… Let’s just mention the great British-French naval battle of 1811 and the Battle of Vis in 1866, in which the entire Italian and Austrian fleets fought. During World War II, Vis was for a time the capital of the new state, and during the Homeland War it was the last Adriatic stronghold abandoned by the Yugoslav People’s Army. Today, the city and island are one of the centers of nautical tourism, and together with Biševo and Modra špilja, they are an unavoidable destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors.
The lecturer and topic will be presented by Jolanda Krnić Zmijanović, a member of the Society for the Preservation of Šibenik Heritage “Juraj Dalmatinac” and the editorial board of the “Juraj” yearbook.
Admission is free.
