The Society for the preservation of Šibenik Heritage “Juraj Dalmatinac” is organizing this year’s fifth lecture as part of the “Šibenik Cultural Heritage” project.
The lecture entitled “Juraj Šižgorić – the world of the first Šibenik poet and interpreter of antiquity” will be held on Thursday, October 23 at 7 pm in the multimedia hall of the Centre, and will present the life and works of Juraj Šižgorić, placing them in the context of new historiographic approaches to the humanistic culture of the 15th century, thus providing an insight into the world in which he lived and created. The talk will cover Šižgorić’s poetic beginnings during his law studies in Padua, his efforts to establish himself as a humanistic messenger of his homeland and interpreter of its antiquity upon his return to his native Šibenik, and, finally, his career ambitions and withdrawal from the humanistic scene.
The lecturer is Luka Špoljarić, assistant professor and head of the Department of World History of the Middle Ages at the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. He deals with the history of Croatian lands in the late Middle Ages and their political and cultural ties with Italy. His research interests focus on the role of imperialism and nationalism in the politics of the late medieval Adriatic region, the spread of humanism and the Renaissance movement, and humanistic literature and manuscript culture.
The lecturer and the topic will be introduced by Jolanda Krnić Zmijanović, a member of the Society for the Preservation of Šibenik Heritage “Juraj Dalmatinac”.
