Cultural heritage: the Šibenik Cathedral

On Thursday, June 30, in the gallery “St. Nikola Tavelić”, the biennial, thematic and selected exhibition of ULUPUH members created on the theme of Croatian national heritage: the Šibenik Cathedral, was officially opened.

In the first edition (2015), the exhibition was devoted to canine heritage, in the second edition (2017) to lace, while in the third (2019) the Šibenik Cathedral was chosen as inspiration – as a motif in textiles, clothing, sculpture, jewelry, photography, ceramics, illustrations, caricatures, multimedia, etc.
Artists of all sections were invited to respond artistically to the overarching theme in their medium of expression, creating a unique work, but also a possible recognizable artistic souvenir.

Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik is the most significant architectural achievement of the 15th and 16th centuries on Croatian soil. Due to its exceptional values, it was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage in 2000.

The curator of the exhibition and the author of the art exhibition, Ivana Bakal, opened the exhibition, and she designed it in 2014 as a series of biennial exhibitions of works in all artistic media based on the Croatian national heritage. Her wish was to invite all our artists (and herself) with an open invitation to an artistic response of high quality and preferably from the creative and cultural industries.

The aim of the project/exhibition is the active inclusion of ULUPUH in the creative and cultural industry by connecting with all the necessary segments for the creation and placement of art in cooperation with partners from the tourism and economic sectors.

The submitted works were selected by a jury consisting of: Ivana Bakal, Višnja Slavica Gabout and Branka Hlevnjak.
As the author of the exhibition and concept, Ivana Bakal presents herself with the installation “She”, natural human dimensions. The work is inspired by the silhouette of the cathedral and the frieze that flows around its apses, on which Juraj Dalmatinac carved seventy-one human heads. The silhouette of the cathedral turns into the silhouette of the dress of a young lady who, according to reports, represents the beautiful daughter of the artist Juraj Dalmatinac himself. The work was created using the combined techniques of lamination, sewing and modeling from wire, cardboard, retex, tow and related materials.

Other exhibitors at the exhibition are: Carlos Ignacio Bellante, Jadranka Hlupić Dujmušić, Igor Galaš, Tatjana Grgurina Vučetić, Ruža Hodak, Vlasta Jarnjak, Vesna Kolobarić, Petra Krpan, Andreja Ana Krušelj Pavličić, Zlatko Odrčić, Snježana Pokos-Vujec, Romulić&Stojčić, Marin Sovar, Sanja Šebalj, Biserka Šipek, Vanja Šolin, Mario Treščec, Sonja Turner Fegić, Svebor Vidmar and Marijana Županić Benić.
