Exhibition of posters of St. Michael

Towards the novena of St. Michael, in the gallery “St. Nikola Tavelić” yesterday, the poster exhibition “St. Michael” in the composition of Branko Lovrić Caparin was opened.

St. Archangel Michael is the first patron of the city of Šibenik and the entire diocese of Šibenik. Mi-ha-el translates as “Who is like God?”, and he is represented as the leader of the heavenly army and the victor over Satan. The first Šibenik fortress was dedicated to him, in which there was also a church of the same name. His image is very present in the identity of Šibenik, not only in the churches (the Cathedral, the church of St. Cross, St. Anna, the church on Vršine…), but it is carved in the stone of its ramparts, on the crowns of wells, lintels of houses, on the seal and city flags.

Before the beginning of the jubilee year of 1998, in which the Diocese of Sibenik celebrated 700 years of establishment, the then bishop, Msgr. Ante Ivas renewed the procession in honor of St. Michael on his feast day on September 29, 1997, which will be a continuation of the tradition that was interrupted, it seems, back in 1835. According to his wish, the photos from that procession will be used to decorate a very beautiful 12-page calendar of the jubilee year, by the following authors: Branko Lovrić Caparin (graphic design), don Stipe Perkov (text), Šime Strikoman (photos), Tomislav Pavičić (photos with the image of St. Michael). From that jubilee year to this current one, Branko Lovrić Caparin graphically designed posters to announce the celebration of the feast of St. Michael for a full 23 years (except for 2020 and 2021 when they were not made).

When designing the posters, the author was guided by the idea of presenting a different figure of Saint Michael, which we have in the area of our city or diocese, carved, painted, engraved…in ancient times and by different artists in recent times.

You can view a large number of preserved posters at this special exhibition, which will remain open until the end of the month. Entrance is free.
