The diatoms of the Krka River
In the crowded hall of the Interpretation Centre ”Civitas Sacra”, the Public Institution Krka National Park, on Friday, October 18, 2019, officially presented the project: “The diatoms of the Krka River – from its source to its mouth”.
The project was discussed by Nella Slavica, Director of the Public Institution “Krka National Park”, Mr.Sc. Gordana Goreta, Head of the Department for Protection of Water, Travertine Barriers and Biodiversity of the Public Institution “Krka National Park”, project manager, prof. dr. sc. Maria Gligora Udovič, and prof. dr. sc. Nenad Jasprica, President of the Croatian Botanical Society.
Namely, diatoms are siliceous seaweeds, whose cells are enveloped in silica, the main component of glass, which, hydrated with a small amount of water, becomes an opal house of seaweeds.
A total of 276 diatom taxa, with their variants and forms, classified into 69 genera, were recorded at the investigated localities in the Krka River.
This project is one of the activities foreseen in the annual programs that implemented the action plans selected for the 10-year Management Plan.
After the presentation of the project, everyone present headed to the space of the gallery for occasional exhibitions ”St. Nikola Tavelić” where an exhibition of photographs of mysterious unicellular organisms – diatoms was inaugurated.
The exhibition remains open until October 26, 2019.
